Inmates in state-run correctional facilities have considerable access to health care, but services should be more coordinated, consistent, and accountable. The Department of Corrections’ services to offenders with chronic illness or mental illness should be improved, and the department’s health services policies and practices should align more closely with professional standards. The department’s health services are not subject to external review, and stronger oversight mechanisms should be considered.
